double page spread examples+ analysis

The images collected above for the secondary research i conducted for my music magazine – ( structure of double page spreads) were all very typical of what is expected to find within a double page spread. The first one with the news paper cut out letters didn’t really appeal to me as it was outside the genre of my magazine. it was more punk/rock/emo and the girl modelling is also that type of model, with dark hair and dark make up. However i did notice how like the other two magazines this also started with an introduction after the massive quoted title. which is a continuance all magazines double page seem to share. Secondly the magazine with ‘JAMELIA” on as the heading really impressed me, and i immediately wanted to use it as a backbone to my own double page spread.  I liked the image on image ( layered effect), the editing was done nicely, also i liked the two different colors used, one for the interviewer and one or the interviewee, the colors also seem to compliment each other, by contrasting and also reflecting the atmosphere. A peachy font color suggests relaxed and “Jammin'” ambiance, which is also mirrored in the image in the background , as the artist Jamelia is sitting on her bed, and isn’t wearing any formal clothing. The third double page spread is of the black eyed peas interview, the only thing that attracted me to this was the fading in fading out of the images used, i thought this was rather rare and considered to use this effect for my own magazine. Also i liked the structure of how the image completely dominated one side of the double page, i also considered this for my own structure, i thought it gave a good clear, distinct portrayal of the interviewee and both his statements and his self portrayal .

OZONE music magazine analysis

the final magazine i will be analysing is Ozone, it has been rated to be the southern voice of hip-hop. it has an element of humour within it, with puns such as “hooker hunting” , and mockery such as “parental advisory – explicit content” which would be rather amusing as this is usually placed on CD’s. i liked the background of the magazine, as it looked rather different. with the photoshop effects of the grey stripes, however the colour grey i thought was too dull, and maybe a colour such as yellow would have been more bold, catchy and appropriate. however, the fact that only two colours were used for the font of the whole front cover shows a continuance, and doesn’t distract the reader from the information and main picture illustrated, and helps the magazine look clearer, with more structure, and the two colours red and blue are contrasts, highlighting each other rather well. The main heading has always got an artist head inside, it a different artist for every issue that’s released. which gave me a few ideas to have in my own magazine as a continuance trend, instead of a picture with every with every issue, i would possibly have a quote by a famous Artist who was rather notorious and has passed away. The main picture is of a currently high status artist “Lil Wayne” whose recognition and popularity has raised in the last few years, and issues such as sex, women, artist news and lack of culture and politics, perhaps suggesting that Ozone magazine is  more for the contemporary audience, aiming for age groups of 15-21, unlike the two before, who are aimed at higher, such as 16-30.

XXl music magazine Analysis

the second magazine i will be analysing is the number one hip hop selling magazine in the world, Unlike “the Source”, “XXL”  concentrates strictly on music, the consumers buy the magazine, for its information on artists, album releases, top 20 in the charts, interviews with the artists. The main image is of the famous rapper Eminem, who is statistically in the top 5 most successful and popular rappers of all time. Its illustrating how XXl use this notorious artists such as Eminem to reel in their consumers. by using a dominant character in the hip hop culture, who has influenced many, thus it will help their marketing. The artists facial expression is once again similarly to the source’s an angry one and once again the artists has his left hand reaching for a gun. once again hinting at violence, however the Gun isn’t in full portrayal and it could be argued its part of his outfit.  The punisher tattoo is black on his chest, its the first thing the viewer sees, it mirrors his expression of anger and evil.  The lettering used is red and white once again, the red’s boldness stands out and catches eye. whilst the white colour is highlighted and clearly visible on the black background. The font used  for the word “Eminem” is hollow, and different, its quiet rare to have transparent font thus catching eye.

The Source Music Magazine Analaysis

the first magazine i will be analysing is “The Source” which is statistically the second most sold hip hop magazine in the world, is wildly credited for its insight into hip hop’s music, politics and culture. I decided to include this within my top 3, and one of the magazines that have influenced me for my own because of its popularity, and also because the theme of politics is rather rare to have within a music magazine therefore, highlighting its uniqueness. The main image used is the rapper Game, with his eyes closed and a gun under his chin, a picture reflecting suicide, however the small heading states “suicide is not an option”  suggesting its advertising the danger and stupidity. Many criticise it for its violent portrayal however due to  its solid good message, its an excellent example of controversy. The colours used, for the writing are red  connotating anger, which mirrors the rappers face, and white which connotates hope , mirroring the message being illustrated. The layout has the main picture in front of the masthead. which suggests the confidence, and popularity of the magazine, because they are able to block part of the letters, and consumers would know which magazine it is. the target audience for this magazine is most likely to be males aged 18+ due to its profound moral messages and young peoples lackof interest in politics.
